Our Inspiration for these Addition Centers & Subtraction Centers
Recently we were talking with a teacher about resources she needed for her classroom.
She shared that her principal was encouraging staff to go as paperless as possible. While the thought of that might sound daunting or near impossible, we all know that funds and supplies such as copy paper are often in short demand.
We need to think outside the box when we prepare lessons and centers. We are hoping to help you create more materials you can reuse over and over again.
As a result of this conversation, we set out to create a collection to meet this need.
What You Will Find
This collection of computation practice resources includes 4 colorful work mats and SEVEN sets of computation task cards.
The following skills are addressed:
- 2-Digit addition without regrouping
- 2-Digit addition with regrouping,
- 3-Digit addition with and without regrouping
- 3 number column addition
- 2-Digit subtraction without regrouping
- 2-Digit subtraction with regrouping
- 3-Digit subtraction with and without regrouping
The materials provided are easily set up as an addition center, a subtraction center or a mixed practice center.
Students draw a card and use their dry erase marker to solve the problem on the work mats. They can then record their answers on the recording sheet provided.
Another option is to use the cards, dry erase markers and work mats in a small guided math group.
Students each choose a different card and work their problems on the mats. You can instantly see the work and thinking of your students so you know what misunderstandings need addressed. Provide some immediate feedback and have them choose another card to check for understanding.

This is perfect activity to do with a small group. They can have cards that reflect areas that each kid needs practice with.

I work in a Title 1 school with limited resources. That's why I absolutely love the idea of using laminated task cards with Expo markers, and the new ink indicators are such a life saver!
