How to organize your classroom library

Looking at your baskets of books and wondering how to get them into some type of order?

Different teachers have different preferences on how to best make this happen.

Not long into my teaching career, organizing books by levels was the thing. I would have baskets with numbers or letters and children were supposed to shop from the baskets that would be close to their level.

Looking back, I really hate this idea now! How many children were prevented from picking a book they might have fallen in love with because it was in a too easy or too hard for them basket?

I now think this was an awful approach and much prefer sorting by themes or authors. Children can choose a basket that is high interest and then choose a book they might enjoy.

Along with authors and themes, you might add in classroom favorites or read alouds as basket labels.
