What is opinion writing?
Opinion writing can often be confused with persuasive writing. However, there is a difference.
In opinion writing, the author’s purpose is to simply share an opinion. Children will share their opinion and give reasons for their opinion.
In persuasive writing, the author’s purpose is to persuade the reader.
About these prompts for writers
You will find three formats in this download.
This first style begins by stating an opinion. Then, students will share four reasons that will support the opinion given.
Next, students will be given two images. They will color or circle the one they like best. After coloring the picture, they will write a paragraph that supports their opinion.
The final set is more open ended. Students will complete the starter. For example, one asks students to name the best snack. After writing their opinion, they will write a paragraph about their opinion. They will include an introductory sentence and a concluding sentence.
There are many options included so you can allow students to choose their writing prompts. While it is ok to have students try to support an opinion they don’t believe just for practice, it is easier to write if students are familiar with the topic. A student who has never played basketball might struggle with sharing reasons why it is the best sport.
