Why should I teach kids how to read and write tally marks?
The skill of reading and writing tally marks is important for students to master.
Children will use this skill during math and science repeatedly as they get older.
Plus, it tends to be one they are able to master quickly so it is great for building confidence.
Students will use tally marks when they are conducting surveys and when they are collecting lab data.
As you begin teaching kids how to read and write tally marks, use objects in the classroom.
They can count and tally a basket of books or count and tally the number of classmates in the room.
About these tally mark centers
I have created these centers with a white background. It will make it easy for you to print on colorful card stock and laminate. I know that not everyone has access to colored ink so I hope this is helpful.
The first two pages are provided as a student resource. you can laminate and place a chart at the table where your students will be working. This can be a reference for children.
Pages 3, 4 and 5 will give you a set of cards for sorting. Students can simply sort and group the matches. Or, you can provide just two sets of cards and students can play a matching game or go fish.
Tally Roll can also be printed on card stock and laminated. Children will then roll one or two dice and record the number.
They will write the correct number of tally marks.
Walk & Tally is like a write the room type of activity. Students will walk around the room and tally the named objects. The final page is left with blanks so you can write in the objects that fit your classroom.
