A look at the second grade standard
This set was created to help teachers meet the second grade foundational skills reading standard – RF.2.3.
The standard says that students should:
Know and apply grade-level phonics word analysis skills in decoding words.
- a. Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words.
- b. Know spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams.
- c. Decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels.
- d. Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes.
- e. Identify words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences.
- f. Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.
These short and long vowel sounds printables
This download contains a few different pages to help you when working with your students.
To begin with, you with find a preassessment. This was designed to be a quick check to assess understanding before you begin teaching. Students who master this check might be ready to move on to a new phonics skill.
There is also a post assessment so that you can check growth when you finish working on the skill.
You can create a booklet for students to use as they work on the vowel sounds.
Print the pages front to back, fold and staple your booklets.
Students can then work to find examples of words that go in each category.
Finally, there is a vowel hunt for students. Begin by letting students know how many words they should find in each category.
You might encourage them to go on a search around the classroom or within a book they are reading. This could be an independent or group task.
