Ideas for photos in the classroom
Do you ever use photos in your classroom? They can be a great tool you can use when teaching many different skills.
It can be helpful to have a collection of printed photos that you laminate to use in different ways. Younger children might be given a stack of photos and need to sort them into categories. As they are working, have them talk with their classmates about their reasoning.
Photos can also be used for inferring. Students can look at a photo and make predictions about what will happen next.
You can give children a picture and have them make a list of adjectives they see. Or, they can create a short story.
Another fun idea is to have students work together to write a story. Each student will write a sentence about the picture and pass it around to their classmates.
These funny animal response slides
All three of my children have walked by multiple times and made comments about the pictures I chose as I was working on this idea. I think that is a sign that the photos can be high interest for a range of ages.
There are three files you will be able to download.
The first is a PDF you can display on your SmartBoard. There is no wording included, each slide contains an animal photo.
These can be used in so many ways. You can display one during morning entry time and have students write a response on your whiteboard or a Post-It Note. Some students might prefer to simply talk about the picture with a classmate.
If you want to use it during a mini-lesson, you could have students share an emotion they feel when they first see the slide. Or, they could name a character trait they believe the animal has along with their reasoning.
The next file is a PowerPoint file. Each slides contains an editable box at the top. You will be able to change this wording to fit your students when in PowerPoint.
Finally, you will find recording pages. These can be used for students who like to doodle and draw when thinking through their answers.
You can download the PDF by clicking on the apple below:
