This set was designed to fit Indiana’s 6th grade civics standards.
Civics is new for 6th grade classrooms in Indiana this year. I began creating some resources to use in my classroom to help with these standards.
This set does not cover all of the 6th grade civics standards.

What do you believe the purpose of the government should be?
I had students work in groups to discuss what they believed governments should be responsible for doing. In my room, this was a great starting point for our unit on civics.
What does the government do? reading passage
This page is designed to help give students an introduction to functions of the government. There are also response spots for reactions to the reading.
Vocabulary Splash
This is a favorite in my classroom. This page contains words from the preamble. To complete this activity, students read the words and put a meaning down for the words they know. As a class, we then talk about each word and students put down a quick meaning. I emphasize that students do not need to write dictionary definitions.
The Preamble
This page contains the preamble. After we had completed the vocabulary splash, we then read the preamble together. The page included can be used for students to take notes. They can explain the meaning around the sides or draw pictures to show what they are reading.
*In class, we talked about insure and defence being spelled differently from how we spell it today.

This page has been left so you can use it however you would like. You can add labels or have students add label.
Think about it
This half page can be used for students to share their thoughts. Students are asked to response to their opinion on how well the U.S. government upholds the principles and purposes stated in the preamble.
Vocabulary Words & Definitions
You will find vocabulary words along with the coordinating definitions. These cards can be used at small groups or as a whole class activity where you work together to sort the cards.

This page shares information about the Magna Carta, Petition of Right, and the English Bill of Rights.
Rome & Greece Government
This page gives a glimpse into how the ancient civilizations first test out democracy.
Branches of Government Chart
I had students read the directions at the top and then label the branches of government at the top and then add job description, people included, and place where the decisions are made on the left.
Within the chart, students will then fill in the sections.

Students researched to find different jobs each branch are responsible for.
Civics Test & Review
This is not the final test I used. I added it to Canvas and made some changes. I’m sharing as a starting point in case you need one.
I had students complete the review together in class. We then checked the answers together.
