President Research Organizer
Researching the lives and legacies of U.S. presidents offers students an opportunity to explore history. They can learn about leadership and civics. To structure this task, we have created a Presidential Research Graphic Organizer.
This page will guide students through each step of their investigation. This resource is designed to deepen students’ understanding of their subject. It will ask them to research the childhood, education, political career, accomplishments, and long-term impacts of a chosen president.
The organizer also invites students to reflect on the leadership qualities that helped shape America’s course.
Sections of the Graphic Organizer
This graphic organizer includes key sections to help students study a president’s life and contributions:
- Childhood and Early Life
- Education
- Learning about a president’s education can help students see the skills and knowledge that prepared them for leadership.
- Political Career
- This section asks students to find when their subject first became involved with politics.
- Interesting Facts
- This space encourages students to note unique and lesser-known details that bring each president’s story to life.
- Major Accomplishments
- In this section, students document the key accomplishments of the president’s time in office. This provides a focused look at each president’s contributions and highlights the impact of their decisions on the nation.
- Leadership Reflection
- One of the most valuable parts of this organizer, the leadership reflection, allows students to evaluate the president’s effectiveness as a leader. They reflect on qualities that contributed to—or detracted from—the president’s leadership abilities. Students can also consider the president’s legacy.
Ideas for Using the Organizer in Class
This research graphic organizer is versatile and can be used in various ways to enhance learning:
- Research Projects: Assign each student or group a different president, allowing the class to build a broad understanding of leadership throughout history.
- Compare and Contrast: Have students pair up to compare the leadership styles, accomplishments, and legacies of different presidents.
- Presentations: After completing the organizer, students can present their findings, giving them an opportunity to develop public speaking skills while sharing historical insights.
- Class Book Have students write a short paper about their president. When they are finished, compile the writings into a class book about the presidents.
