Bugs Alphabet Game

Our bugs alphabet game can be a fun addition to your spring early learning centers (another free resource for teachers from The Curriculum Corner.)

Bugs Alphabet Game free from The Curriculum Corner

This bugs alphabet game was created for children who are learning to match uppercase and lowercase letters.

For this bugs alphabet game, each board only focuses on 3 or 4 letters at a time and the letters are in alphabetical order.

Game boards have a path that students follow as they match their uppercase and lowercase letters.

The super cute bug theme is sure to help engage students this spring!

We have provided the boards in this game with a colorful green background, but also with white backgrounds. Both sets have colorful clip art, but the white backgrounds will be a good option for those wanting to conserve colored ink.

How to set up your BUGS Alphabet Game

  1. Begin by printing the boards of your choice.  Printing on heavy, white card stock is a good option for durability.
  2. Laminate the game boards and cards.
  3. Cut the letter cards apart.
  4. Place the letter cards and the matching board at a center.
  5. Provide students with buttons or other game pieces.

**It is sometimes a challenge for early literacy learners to know the correct direction of the b, d and p. In this game, the d and the p fall on cards with our web site watermark. With the name of the site being at the bottom in fine print it will hopefully make it easier for students to determine the correct direction for these letters. If you don’t feel that will help, then it might be a good idea to use a different color of marker to underline each of these letters after printing.

Directions for Your Bugs Alphabet Game

This game  is fairly simple.  Once the game is taught, even your youngest students should be able to play without assistance.

  1. It is important to make sure at least one student in each pair or group of students playing is able to correctly match the uppercase and lowercase letters. That student can be the “checker” for the rest so that you can make sure your students are practicing matching the letters correctly.  Or you might also have students play this game with an adult volunteer or assistant nearby if that’s possible.
  2. Students will begin at the START bug by placing their game pieces on the ant.
  3. Children take turns flipping over one lowercase letter card per turn.
  4. They move to the first spot with a matching uppercase letter.
  5. The first student to the snail at the end containing all of the letters is the winner.
