This free PowerPoint game is designed to give your kindergarten students practice with identifying beginning sounds.
You can download this free Beginning Sounds PowerPoint game by clicking on the bold, pink link at the bottom of this post.
This is the second interactive PowerPoint game we have created for our kindergarten site and focuses on beginning sounds. As many teachers are moving towards classrooms with less paper, these types of resources for computer centers or even whole class participation is a great option. We are planning to create a larger collection of PowerPoint games to be used with your interactive whiteboard or at independent student computers.
The PowerPoint presentations will cover a wide range of language arts and math skills so that you have an interactive option at your disposal when you introduce a new skill or concept or when you need your students to practice.
Set this beginning sounds game up on your student computers for morning practice or during literacy centers.
To use this with your whole class, give your students small white boards and dry erase markers. Display a slide with picture and letter options, give students time to say the word to themselves and write a letter to match the beginning sounds on their dry erase boards, then begin clicking on answers one by one. Students can self check and get excited as they see that their answers match the correct answers on the PowerPoint presentation.
This game focuses on beginning sounds in words. Correct answers are praised with a “Good Job!” smiley face slide. A click on the words takes the user to the next slide.
Incorrect responses take users to a “Try again.” slide. Clicking on those words will take them back to the original picture to try again.
**IMPORTANT NOTE: In order for the slides to transition correctly, you (or the students) MUST click on the underlined words on the slide as they are the parts that are hyperlinked to the correct answer slide/next slide. Any clicks outside the words will move them to the following slide in the presentation, which may or may not be correct.
To play independently, students need to click on the word “HERE” on the first slide where it says “Click Here to Start”. This will take them to the Directions slide, which will most likely need to be read to them. Keep this fact in mind for independent practice. You may want to discuss directions and show the class what to do before sending them to their centers.
The game is created so that the final slide is linked to return to the first slide.

**Once you have downloaded your game, simply click on the view tab at the top and then select reading view. This will start your game. **
You will need the following KG Font for your game to display correctly: KG Neatly Printed (We have a commercial use license for ourselves, you will just need to download the free version!)
If you have ideas for new skills you would like to see games created for, please share in the comments below or send us a message. We want to make sure the games we are creating will fit what teachers need in the classroom.

This is what i have been looking for to help my preschoolers! Can I edit this to go along with our review lesson? Will the slides still work the same? I have tried to edit it myself but the "Good Job!" slide or "try again" slide doesn't come up like it should.
Thanks!

Hi Nichole, Not sure what could be happening, but we will say that we struggled with links changing for some reason as we were working on the resources. Let us look into why that might be happening for you, but one tip we can give you is to make sure you are clicking DIRECTLY on the words (including answers) on each slide. If you click anywhere else it will take you to the next slide in the presentation, which may not be where you need to go depending on the correct answer. Thanks for letting us know!

Love this game! Only question is that I'm not sure where to click after the "Good Job!" slide, and it always takes me to the "next" slide, which is the "try again" one - so they get the right answer, then get the try again, then finally see the next game question. Any way to fix this, or tell me where to click so I don't see the "try again"?
Thanks!

Hi Jen! You have to click actually ON the underlined words "Good Job!" to get to the correct slide. If you click anywhere else it simply moves straight to the next slide in order in the presentation, which is not the next question, but the "Try again" slide. We are working to find a way to fix this issue, but until then, just be sure to click on the underlined words, which should provide the correct hyperlink to the appropriate slide. So sorry!
